Learn what a Pharmacy Personal Statement is

A Pharmacy Personal Statement is part of your UCAS application. It’s your chance to explain why you want to study pharmacy, demonstrate your suitability for the course, and show your commitment to a career in healthcare.

  • From 2026, UCAS no longer uses one long essay.

  • Instead, you’ll answer 3 structured questions with a minimum of 350 characters each (total limit still 4,000 characters).

  • This makes the process clearer, fairer, and less overwhelming.

Understand how long it needs to be

  • Maximum: 4,000 characters (~500–600 words).

  • Minimum: 350 characters per section.

  • Focus on clarity, reflection, and linking back to pharmacy.

Find out what it should include

The three new UCAS questions:

  1. Why do you want to study pharmacy?

    • Trigger: What sparked your interest?

    • Reflection: Why was it meaningful?

    • Action: What did you do to explore pharmacy?

    • Link: How does this connect to your career goals?

  2. How have your qualifications and studies prepared you?

    • Match subjects to pharmacy relevance (Chemistry → drug formulation, Biology → human physiology, Maths → dosage calculations).

    • Reflect on lab work and how it taught precision and responsibility.

  3. What else have you done to prepare outside of education?

    • Healthcare experiences: volunteering in community/hospital pharmacy, virtual NHS placements.

    • Other roles: retail, caregiving, sports — highlight transferable skills (teamwork, empathy, discipline).

    • Personal projects: reading, webinars, pharmacy insight days

Discover how to structure your Personal Statement

  • Intro (Q1): Why pharmacy? Use “The Pharmacy Hook” (“My interest in pharmacy began when…”).

  • Academics (Q2): Link subjects + skills → pharmacy relevance.

  • Experience (Q3): Highlight work experience, jobs, extracurriculars with pharmacy traits.

  • Conclusion: Summarise motivation, readiness, and commitment to patient care.
